Azimut Grande 32M: chilled-water AC failure, root cause wantedAzimut Grande 32M: AC root cause wanted

Timeline

What this page tells you: everything that has happened, in date order, from commissioning in 2023 to today.

The first faults were recorded in early 2024 (controller alarms logged in January, contamination found in the chilled-water loop in February), about 6–7 months after delivery on 26 Jun 2023 and within the 12-month warranty period.

Azimut’s stated position (after-sales email, 28 Jul 2026) is that the 2024 loop contamination is technically unrelated to the 2026 failures.

No one has yet established a root cause that either links or separates the 2024 faults and the 2026 failures.

31 Mar 2023Plant commissioned at the yard
2 Jan 2024Code 30 drive alarm (inverter overheating) on units 3, 2, 1 within ~2.5 h
Feb 2024ReplacedDebris found in FW loop; loop cleaned, heat exchangers, solenoids and actuators replaced, loop refilled (works completed 12 Feb 2024). Fischer Panda / Climma service, with ASAP Marine attending 10–11 Feb. C1 overheating recorded (solenoid valve not opening)
3 Mar 2024Unit 2 low FW flow, then repeated flow alarm (Code 7→52)
Aug 2024Whole-plant shutdown, reported as CAN communication fault
Feb 2025ReplacedSW valve, FW-side valves and SW pump replaced
16 Jun 2025ReplacedFan-coil capacitors replaced (manufacturer pre-emptive campaign)
Aug 2025ReplacedUnit 3 inverter board replaced
Dec 2025FailedCompressor 3 taken out of service (oil discharge)
13 Dec 2025Units 1–2 to DIS-VOLT (undervoltage) ~30 s after start, on generator
29 Jan 2026Burnt IGBT on unit 3 inverter board
Feb 2026ReplacedUnit 3 inverter board replaced again
20 Feb 2026Ownership context A main-engine start battery (Exide EF2353, 235 Ah) ruptured on start-up. All four batteries in the bank were replaced and balanced, and the charger was recalibrated. A written cause was not provided. No link to the AC is suggested.
May 2026Shutdowns incl. display, no alarm logged; 29 May insulation tests
29 Jun 2026Unit 3 line reactor (swapped from unit 1): W-phase lead charred
27–29 Jul 2026FailedCAN loss mod 1; unit 2 flow alarms, flow 6.71→0.00 m³/h, plate 62.3 °C (flow sensor, blown solenoid fuse). All three modules out of service 29 Jul
3 Aug 2026RestoredUnit 2 restored (temporary flow-sensor bypass, two fuses replaced); unit 2 runs the yacht alone
14 Aug 2026New flow sensor fitted
11–19 Aug 2026FailedOvernight shore-power loss; CAN loss mod 2; Code 30 over-current; ABB C50 breaker trip. 19 Aug: compressor 2 failed (insulation ~5.6 Ω); no cooling capacity since

DateEvent
18 Jun 2026Owner notifies the insurer of the circumstances and reports the failures to Azimut in writing.
18–19 JunInsurer opens a claim and sends the policy clauses.
29–30 JunIndependent inspection on board: unit 3 line-reactor W-phase lead found charred.
10 JulFirst written reply from Azimut after-sales.

28 JulAzimut after-sales states that the 2024 contamination work was completed within the 12-month warranty window and that the 2024 dirt is technically unrelated to the current failures; it notes the failure rate is not normal and that damaged parts should go to the manufacturer to investigate the exact causes.
29 JulFailedAll three modules out of service.
30 JulJoint video call: Azimut and Veco. Completed claim form sent to the insurer.
3 AugRestoredUnit 2 restored by ASAP Marine (temporary flow-sensor bypass, two fuses replaced).
6–13 AugSEA Power (manufacturer's regional dealer) quotes four options, including replacing the existing chillers like for like and replacing the whole system.

19 AugFailedCompressor 2 fails; the manufacturer confirms it has lost insulation and is not functioning. No cooling capacity since.
26–27 AugInsurer's appointed surveyors attend on board.
1–9 SepCorrespondence with the surveyor appointed by the insurer; cause of the failures not yet established.
11 SepInsurer advises cover to be on an ashore, out-of-commission basis, citing fire risk from reported overheating of electrical components, including the shore-power isolation transformer.
14–15 SepInsurer requires the yacht to be laid up from arrival at the yard, with affected components out of use, pending repair.
18 SepAzimut after-sales confirms mobilisation for an on-board check. Owner asks the insurer for the surveyors' findings with measurements and photos, or written confirmation if there are none.
21 SepInsurer advises the surveyors did not identify the cause, and that the transformer is to stay out of use until confirmed to be within normal temperature parameters.
24 SepInsurer advises the survey has not determined the AC cause.
25 SepInsurer proposes a settlement.
6 OctInsurer withdraws the settlement proposal and reverts to standard claim handling.
9 OctInsurer advises it awaits the builder's findings and asks the owner to establish the fault and provide repair estimates. Builder advises that as-built wiring is to be verified with the manufacturer and that the commissioning document is the available fill record.
12 OctManufacturer supplies the electrical diagram for the installed CWS 3603 (order 7704, dated 15 Feb 2022). The documents supplied at delivery covered CWS 2402.
27–28 Oct (planned)Builder-arranged on-board inspection by D&G (builder's electrical subcontractor) and Polipodio (builder-appointed specialist). SEA Power (manufacturer's regional dealer) has advised it is not available that week and offered alternative weeks.
